Lady Jane Grey Returns: Pageant, 1951. Leicester Mercury Archives.
70 years ago, to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Bradgate Park held a variety of celebrations as the new monarch ascended to the throne. Today, we're doing the same: thanks to funding from the Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we're embarking on a new project - The Park. The Past. The Platinum - to celebrate the last 70 years of memories at Bradgate Park in commemoration of this year's Platinum Jubilee.
Bradgate Park is landscape jam-packed full of memories, from first dates to first steps. With your help, we're creating a piece of public art inspired by these memories, which will be mounted on the side of the Deer Barn in June - and whether your memories of Bradgate Park stretch back to 1952 or just 2022, we want you to get involved!
Join one of our FREE art workshops in the Visitor Centre where you can share your memories, and work with professional local artists to help to design the artwork. No artistic experience is required: all you need is a passion for the Park! Using creative writing and a variety of visual art techniques, your memories will form the basis of this piece of artwork that reflects 70 years of memories of Bradgate.
A family friendly workshop will be taking place from 11am-12.30pm on Saturday 14th May, and general adult workshops will be taking place from 2-3.30pm on Saturday 14th May and 11am-12.30pm on 16th May.
Project supported by Buzzing Roots CIC.
We'll be creating a new oral history archive, made up of the recollections of our visitors and volunteers - and anyone with a love for the park! From stories of picnics to pageants, visiting to volunteering, long rambling hikes to a quick meander down the carriageway - we want to hear it all.
We're inviting everyone to come along and reminisce with us - contributing your memories will go towards creating an invaluable archive that illustrates the fascinating history of the park, and the incredible connection that people have to it.
Got a memory you'd like to share? Here's how to get involved:
We'll be holding two informal drop-in sessions outside the Visitor Centre in May 2022. Simply bring along your memories and your voice - and maybe a picture or two! - and sit down with us to reminisce. These drop-in sessions will take place on Tuesday 10th May, 11am-1pm, and Saturday 28th May, 10am-1pm. Click the links for more details!
Alternatively, give us a call on 0116 236 2713 ext. 34, or email us at [email protected]. We will give you more information about the project, and we'll organise a time to record your memories.
On 2nd June, we'll be starting the long Bank Holiday in style! Celebrations will line the carriageway, including live music, a BBQ, and the unveiling of our new artwork.
Later in the evening, the iconic Old John will be illuminated as a beacon, joining thousands of other landmarks across the UK to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
Watch this space - more information will be shared soon!
