The Park. The Past. The Platinum.

Lady Jane Grey Returns: Pageant, 1951. Leicester Mercury Archives.

70 years ago, to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Bradgate Park held a variety of celebrations as the new monarch ascended to the throne. Today, we're doing the same: thanks to funding from the Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we're embarking on a new project - The Park. The Past. The Platinum - to celebrate the last 70 years of memories at Bradgate Park in commemoration of this year's Platinum Jubilee.

A piece of art, created by your memories.

Bradgate Park is landscape jam-packed full of memories, from first dates to first steps. With your help, we've been working to create a piece of public art inspired by these memories, which will be mounted on the side of the Deer Barn.

Through a series of workshops in collaboration with Buzzing Roots CIC, a group of visitors wrote poems and created artwork inspired by their memories of and connections to the park. From sledding in the snow to sunsets at Old John, visiting alone during lockdown to visiting with dearest friends and family members - these memories have formed the basis of an artwork that celebrates the countless memories that have been made on the landscape of Bradgate Park.

Come along to our Jubilee Street Party on Thursday 2nd June to see the artwork for the first time!

A street party at Bradgate Park.

On 2nd June, we'll be starting the long Bank Holiday in style! Here's what you can expect on the day:

  • We'll be firing up the BBQ at 12pm, serving venison sausages and burgers, as well as vegan options.
  • From 12.30-5pm, get your face painted, try your hand at crafts, or build your own Bug-ingham Palace!
  • At 1pm, our new public artwork will be unveiled on the side of the Deer Barn Café and Visitor Centre.
  • At 2pm, Enderby Band will be delighting us with a performance on the Deer Meadow - beside the Deer Barn Café and Visitor Centre.
  • From 3-4.30pm, spot Bakanalia Border Morris dancing along the carriageway!

Later in the evening, the iconic Old John will be illuminated as a beacon, joining thousands of other landmarks across the UK to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Find out more about the event here.

Beacon Lighting at Old John

Across the UK and the Commonwealth at 9.45pm on 2nd June, over two thousand beacons will be lit in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen's 70 year reign - and this includes Old John! The iconic landmark will be visible for miles around, illuminated on the hill until 10.30pm.

Your memories, in your words.

We'll be creating a new oral history archive, made up of the recollections of our visitors and volunteers - and anyone with a love for the park! From stories of picnics to pageants, visiting to volunteering, long rambling hikes to a quick meander down the carriageway - we want to hear it all.

We're inviting everyone to come along and reminisce with us - contributing your memories will go towards creating an invaluable archive that illustrates the fascinating history of the park, and the incredible connection that people have to it.

Got a memory you'd like to share? Give us a call on 0116 236 2713 ext. 34, or email Amy at [email protected]. We will give you more information about the project, and we'll organise a time to record your memories.
