Conservation Volunteering

Help care for the heritage of Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood

The Conservation Volunteers get a hands-on experience of the work involved in managing the natural heritage of Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood, across all seasons. They get involved in a wide range of habitat conservation and maintenance tasks across the whole Estate.

Dry Stone Walling

Tasks include:

  • dry stone walling

  • tree planting

  • tree frame construction

  • invasive plant species control

  • making our unique Bradgate Park charcoal and splitting logs for firewood, both of which are sold to raise funds for the Charity;

...to name but a few.

Tree Frame Repair and Construction

If being outside is what you’re looking for, then this group is for you! All support and training is provided with tasks led by Volunteer Co-ordinator, rangers and some of our trained key volunteers who 'Take The Lead' and support tasks.

We provide protective clothing as needed for a task and plenty of tea and coffee to help make the day a social one, as well as a great way to spend time outdoors! We also have all the tools and guidance you need for those that want to join tasks.

Charcoal Burning in Bradgate

Outdoor opportunities also include the chance to work with our Gardening Volunteering Team in our wildlife friendly; allotment and historic gardens. This team have been working to restore the traditional kitchen garden in the Ruins of Bradgate House, as well as growing food at the Newtown Linford Community Garden. Tasks vary throughout the seasons, but it is a gentle way to enjoy helping at the Park. If you are interested in Gardening Tasks, please email our Volunteer Co-ordinator ([email protected]) with an email headed Gardening Tasks.

We also have regular Litter Collecting days which visit the more remote areas of the Park, helping keep the Park clean and removing rubbish that could harm the deer. The Team meet Mondays: in the winter every other week, but weekly in busier periods.  If you are interested in joining the Litter Picking Group, please email our Volunteer Co-ordinator ([email protected]) with an email headed Litter Picking Group.
